ARTIST: CECELIA BOND

As a child, my mother read "The Old Woman In The Shoe" to me. Later she found me drawing a picture of a shoe with heads sticking out of all the windows. My mother said, "this child is going to be an artist."
I'm a native Philadelphian, who moved to Boston at an early age. As a Jr. in high school, I entered an art contest given by the American Red Cross. The purpose was to show other children in foreign Countries what life was like in the United States. The painting, "A Spring Scene" depicted the countryside surrounding my grandfather's house. The landscape was one of the paintings chosen to be shown around the world.
In 1960, a painting of mine, "A view into the neighborhood," won the Boston Globe key Award. The painting showed my view from my 3rd floor window on top the hill in Dorchester Ma. I had a great view," I could see everybody and everything. I painted what I saw: children playing, people going into the store and coming out; parents doing their Saturday things, washing cars, sweeping, etc.
There were thousands of pictures entered and only 600 were chosen to be exhibited. They were hung at Boston University's School of Applied Arts for a month-long competion. I was 15 years old. That year I also won a 3 year scholarship to attend the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where I received some of my training. I married at the age of 18 and art was put on hold. After raising six wonderful children, now 6 wonderful young adults, I returned to pursue my passion in art.
Now a resident of Chester and grandmother of six, I am again pursuing my passion for capturing life on canvas. I work primarily in oil and I've been commissioned to paint portraits, landscapes and seascapes, My paintings have been exhibited at the New York Film and Arts Festival (Madison SQ. Gardens), Philadelphia Black Expo, University of Pennsylvania, Rowan University, October Galleries Annual Art Show, Diszner's Gallery, Naacp's Annual Art Show, Chester County Historical Society Art Show and The Hickman to name a few.

I put art on hold for a large part of my life and with the help of a dear friend, who encouraged, supported and helped me. I have been able to bring forth the talent that revealed itself at such a very young age.

I'll advise you of my next show in this space. Keep watch.
